Creating a new form time activity each week is not necessarily difficult, but it can take time, and it is occasionally the case that form time is not used as fully as it might be..

Of course there are many form time programmes that have been produced commercially – but with these it is not always clear what one will get if making a purchase.

Which is why we offer all our form time activities on a free trial basis. What’s more, if you ask for a trial, you get to choose which lessons you see – not the ones we have chosen for you. And, if you like our resources, we have now halved the price of an annual subscription for unlimited access for the whole school.

We’ve created a series of KS3 and KS4 form time plans that can be used throughout the year. Each includes a PDF overview and a PowerPoint presentation.

Topics currently include…

Ofsted, naturally, makes a lot of demands and requests upon the schools it inspects.

But in the past year it has become increasingly clear that there is one issue that, when it is organised correctly, impresses the inspectorate almost more than any other.

Of course schools still need to focus on the wide range of Ofsted demands and requests but, because of the pre-eminence of this one issue, presenting evidence on it not only impresses the inspectors on that topic but it also sets the tone for the whole inspection.

The issue is homework.

Show the inspectors that students, their parents, your colleagues and SLTs all know what homework has been set, the deadlines for each homework, and the details of each piece of work, and immediately there is the impression of organisation and attention to detail that Ofsted inspectors so admire.

Be able to show all that within a couple of minutes, and you will start to see the inspectors’ faces nodding with approval as ticks are put in the boxes.

Then show that you have incorporated the provision for non-English speaking parents to be able to access translations of the homework, and you will see that look that says you are almost home and dry.

Finally, make the point that the students not only know what homework they have to do – they also know that everyone else knows. The old story about no homework being set is dead and buried once and for all.

Thus homework in your school is set, and the completion rates for homework are higher than ever before.

Such a solution – like the issue of homework itself – is simple. It is called “Show My Homework”, it is used by schools across the country, and you can sign up for a free trial on our website by clicking here.

Alternatively you can call us on 020 8133 4560 for more information.

Seymour Papert invented Logo and the first educational robots – Turtles. He had two PhDs in Maths and worked with Jean Piaget exploring how children learnt mathematics.

He said two things:

“The key to learning is not about learning processes but about falling in love with the subject.”

“Roamer is the best tool I have seen for helping children fall in love with mathematics.”

Papert was referring to the classic Roamer – but now the new and improved Roamer is continuing to bring Maths alive for the next generation of children.

The whole gist of the Roamer approach is the emotional engagement of students in a positive way with mathematics. It is about getting them to realise how natural mathematics is and what natural mathematicians they are. Just playing with Roamer immediately engages with their mathematical self.

The new features of Roamer enhance this mathematical power, supporting students as they progress through the Maths curriculum.

The simplest Roamer uses counting, but then at infant level the students are taken beyond counting to using number as part of their programming.

This scaffolded approach to learning supports the child’s acquisition of mathematical concepts. And the fact that Roamer is the world’s first talking educational robot adds an excitement to the learning.

The new Roamer helps bridge the gap between the abstract and the concrete. It brings Maths alive, making it authentic – connecting with the child’s experience of the world.

To find out more about how Roamer can help your pupils fall in love with Maths please visit http://www.roamer-robot.com/public/maths.html

For more information you can also call 020 8673 2233 or email us at info@valiant-technology.com

There is currently an opportunity for FE colleges to recruit more international students thanks to the decline in the number of private colleges following the changes to UK student visa regulations. The Association of Business Executives (ABE) can help you increase your international student numbers.

ABE is a UK examinations body with a broad international operation based on the Commonwealth. Historically around one third of ABE’s 50,000 students come to the UK to study ABE qualifications before going on to university (also in the UK as more than 40 universities here accept ABE qualifications for entry). These students could potentially now come to your institution as there are few places for them at the private colleges. However, you need to be able to offer them something they understand and are familiar with, which is where ABE’s established international reputation can help you.

ABE offers Diploma qualifications from QCF Level 4 up to Level 6 in four programmes:

Business Management (with three separate pathways in Business Management, Financial Management and the Management of Information Systems
Human Resource Management
Marketing Management, and
Travel, Tourism and Hospitality Management
ABE also offers a Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management.

The programmes are very flexible as they share several units, so you can offer a range of subjects with larger, more economic, class sizes. The examinations are run twice a year in June and December, but ABE can offer exemptions for approved prior learning for up to half of the subjects at Levels 4, 5 and 6. For more information on all the benefits please go to the ABE website at www.abeuk.com.

I would therefore invite you to apply to become an ABE accredited college. Please contact me on 020 8329 2948 or mariam@abeuk.com.

Regards

Maria Monks
Head of Business Development
Association of Business Executives (ABE)
T: 020 8329 2948

This step-by-step, straightforward programme of ten lesson plans provides all the information needed to run a successful Anger Management programme. It will enable students to gain the essential skills they need to develop their emotional literacy, using real-life examples with which they will identify. During the course, participants will learn:

self-awareness
self-management
impulse control
active listening
empathy
understanding of non-verbal cues
conflict resolution and mediation.
Central to the programme is how to deal with angry outbursts – known as ‘emotional hijacks’ – both pre- and post-hijack. It will offer students a way through their anger to a more optimistic outlook, a better focus and acceptance of other people.

The aim, required resources and methods are outlined at the beginning of each lesson and are all accompanied by user-friendly, reproducible student and teacher worksheets. The programme is available for either primary or secondary students and in each case is priced at £39.95 + VAT plus £3.50 Post and packing.

Anger Management – Secondary, Order code: 036HH
Anger Management – Primary, Order code: 043HH
Please quote the order code when ordering:

Having computers stolen from the school is no-one’s favourite scenario. It is disruptive (both in terms of getting in the replacement machines and trying to recover lost data) and therefore incredibly time-consuming.

And, if a server is stolen as well, the matter can be a lot worse – not least because the Data Protection Office is increasingly showing an interest in such matters and will want assurance that the data on the machine was encrypted.

Because the number of computer thefts from schools is rising, both insurance companies and the police are endorsing the use of security cages to help reduce the loss.

These not only reduce thefts but also reduce malicious damage.

Better still, the security cages are themselves reusable. For when a computer is retired from active life in the school one can move the security device and put it on another machine.

In other words, security, once bought, provides protection for computer after computer after computer – and they may well result in a discount on your insurance policy.

At PC Safe we offer a range of tower PC/server security cages and desktop PC/Server security cages that are both totally enclosed and also partially accessible, in standard and bespoke sizes. These cages can be supplied in a colour of your choice and at a price to meet your budget.

Furthermore, these cages are insurance compatible and police recommended. We also specialise in LPCB approved cages.

For more information please visit our website www.pc-safe.co.uk, call us on 01902 784800 or email us at info@pc-safe.co.uk.

Srinivasa Ramanujan lived an extraordinary life.

If he is not someone you have heard of, that is not too surprising since he died nearly 100 years ago at the age of 32.

He came from a very humble background, but in his short life became the first Indian elected to be a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge.

Remarkable – but then the world is full of remarkable people. So why should we be concerned with this one man now, after all this time?

The answer is because Ramanujan is an inspiration.

Having had virtually no formal training in maths he made a series of amazing contributions to the subject. He received a scholarship to study at Government College in Kumbakonam, India – but then amazingly had it taken away from him because he failed his non-mathematical coursework.

However, he would not give up. He joined another college to pursue independent mathematical research. He then sent samples of his theorems to three academics at the University of Cambridge. Two of the academics never replied to him – but one did, and this led to his being elected as a Fellow at Cambridge and of the Royal Society.

And yet, despite this recognition, he died of malnutrition at the age of 32.

His work has inspired a vast amount of further research, and there is now an international journal devoted to publishing his work.

What’s more, the Government of India celebrates Ramanujan’s birthday as ‘National Mathematics Day’ every year on 22 December and declared 2012 as the ‘National Mathematical Year’.

To celebrate this remarkable man’s life and the way in which he constantly strived against rejection and difficulties, we have produced a KS3/KS4 resource which includes a play and 3 worksheets that contain four or five activities in each. Director’s notes are also included for putting on a performance, with suggestions about sets and props.

The worksheets contain activities on The Hardy-Ramanujan number; investigating the sums of squares, and investigating triangular numbers – thus providing a unique link between drama and maths.

Teachers may choose activities from the worksheets according to the level and ability of their students.

This resource contains 26 copiable masters which are available as a spiral bound book, as a PDF CD, or as a Word file on a CD. The price of £19.99 + VAT is the same for all formats.

Once purchased the CD can be freely copied and networked throughout the school.

In order to help prepare Year 1 children for the ‘Phonics Screening Check’, we have devised a photocopiable book of practice materials which contains sets of words to enable children to become familiar with the way in which the Government test will be presented.

The phonics screening check is constructed from 20 real words and 20 ‘pseudo-words’. The pseudo-words provide the purest assessment of phonic decoding because they will be new to all children.

The pseudo-words are identified by a picture prompt of an imaginary creature and the children should be asked to name the type of creature. This approach makes it clear to children that they are reading unfamiliar words.

There are four different phonic screening tests in this book (A, B, C and D).

Each Phonic Screening Test contains the following items:

Individual pupil answer sheet
Warm up words (4 real and 4 pseudo)
40 words to use in the screening
A class record/analysis sheet
Free sample pages are available on our website.

If you would like to know more please call 01772 863158 or email us at enquiries@topical-resources.co.uk

It’s not too long before the exam season when sometimes there may be a bit of panic in the air …. and not just for students facing their GCSE or A level exams!

Judging by the comments we’ve had from staff over the years, it seems that “the powers that be” in their school or college suddenly decide they need some new exam desks…. and they want them yesterday!

If you’re faced with such a situation (or even if you don’t have such a tight deadline) then why not give us a call (tel: 020 7515 1797) or visit our website to see how we might be able to help.

We can supply folding , cantilever or “zimmer” style desks from only £15.95 ex vat, as well as transporters for folding desks. We can often supply exam desks at short notice although it’s always easier if we have a few weeks notice!

PS. If you’re also in the market for new classroom tables and chairs you may find what you need on our website…… or why not call us to discuss?
